Old City of Jerusalem Panorama from Mount of Olives

"Yom Yerushalayim"

"Yom Yerushalayim" is a panoramic image photographed in Kikar Tziyon – at the juncture of Ben Yehuda and Jaffa Streets.  Yom Yerushalayim is observed annually on the 28th day of Iyar and celebrates the reunification of the city in 1967.  Thousands of people participate in the festive Mitz’ad haDgalim (Flag Parade) creating a human river of blue and white that winds its way from the new city to the old – symbolically uniting Yerushalayim – and culminates with music and dancing in the Kotel Plaza.

Although Jerusalem has been considered the capital city of the Jewish people since the time of King David – who conquered it and established it as the seat of his monarchy in approximately 1000 B.C.E. – there has never been a special day in honor of the city until recent years.  This photograph was shot in the spring of 5764 (2004)
